INTERVIEW: Really Large Numbers talks about their Work Featured In The Sciart Center Exhibition "The New Unconscious"
By Danielle Kalamaras
Really Large Numbers is a laboratory that encompasses the individual and collaborative experiments of Chad Stayrook (Brooklyn, NY) and Julia Oldham (Eugene, OR).This artistic duo's work is featured in the virtual exhibition The New Unconscious currently on view on SciArt Center's website. The artists took the time to speak to me about their work and what the 'new unconscious' means to them as artists:
Danielle Kalamaras: How do you define the "New Unconscious"? What part does this unconscious play in your work?
Really Large Numbers: As a team, Really Large Numbers utilizes a new unconscious as a method of making work and telling stories. We call this phenomenon the Dream Thread, and it is a fusion of technological, mystical and telepathic communication systems that allow us to be tightly connected over very long distances. We discovered our Dream Thread shortly before we began collaborating, when we began to have dreams about one another. We would tell each other our dreams by email and skype (we live 3,000 miles apart), and then in knowing each other's dreams would build our dream world further every night. Our Dream Thread is a ripe place from which we draw many of our artistic ideas. We have hundreds of dreams written down or recorded in some way in our correspondences that have expanded our world to include dream-formed places and characters and songs and words and realms of science.

How does the unconscious affect your everyday perception and behavior?
This unconscious, this techno-dreamy link, allows us to slurp up the everyday world and incorporate it into the Dream Thread. Everything we see, hear, taste or smell can be pulled into that world to make it richer. All experiences can be chewed up and turned into dreamstuff and spread between us and built into a structure that runs from past to future and sideways.
What does "SciArt" mean to you?
SciArt is the place between worlds, much like the new unconscious, where we can pursue the irrational rationally and vice versa.
Really Large Numbers' work is featured in the virtual exhibition The New Unconscious curated by Danielle Kalamaras. This exhibition features the work of 30 SciArt Center members. Click here to see all the featured artwork and to learn more about each artist.
